Shield
Red and yellow are used for Artillery. The fleur-de-lis headed arrow symbolizes the organizations assault landing in the Southern France campaign and its function of antiaircraft artillery. The gunstones, ancient symbol of artillery, represent the units other six campaigns in Europe during World War II.
Crest
The crest is that of the Alabama Army National Guard.
The coat of arms was originally approved for the 108th Antiaircraft Artillery Battalion (Automatic Weapons) on 6 May 1955. It was redesignated for the 278th Artillery Regiment on 13 December 1960.
