Description
A Gold color metal and enamel device 1 1/8 inches (2.86 cm) in height overall consisting of a shield blazoned:  Per fess enhanced Gules and Or, in chief an arrow barbed with a fleur-de-lis of the last and in base six gunstones.  Attached below and to the sides of the shield a Gold scroll inscribed IN VIGILANTIA SPES in Red letters.

Symbolism
Red and yellow are used for Artillery.  The fleur-de-lis headed arrow symbolizes the organizations assault landing in the Southern France campaign and its function of antiaircraft artillery.  The gunstones, ancient symbol of artillery, represent the units other six campaigns in Europe during World War II.  The motto translates to In Valor There Is Hope.

Background
The distinctive unit insignia was originally approved for the 108th Antiaircraft Artillery Battalion (Automatic Weapons) on 6 May 1955.  It was redesignated for the 278th Artillery Regiment on 13 December 1960.
